Charter Availability

Due to Lake Minnetonka charter regulations, captained charters on Lake Minnetonka are limited to groups of up to 6 guests.

On all other Minnesota lakes, Makana Surf Co. is able to accommodate private charters for groups of up to 13 guests depending on location, availability, and scheduling.

Please note:

A minimum booking duration of 3 hours is required.

A $300 deposit is required to secure your reservation. This deposit is fully refundable if canceled at least 7 days prior to the booking date or in the event of bad weather.

Optional Captained Pontoon Charter Service

Want to sit back and enjoy the lake without driving? Makana Surf Co. also offers optional captained pontoon charter services for an additional $50/hour.

Due to Lake Minnetonka charter regulations, captained pontoon charters on Lake Minnetonka are limited to groups of up to 6 guests.

On all other Minnesota lakes, Makana Surf Co. is able to accommodate private captained pontoon charters for groups of up to 10 guests depending on location, availability, and scheduling.

Please note:

A minimum booking duration of 4 hours is required. For rentals exceeding 8 hours or to arrange a custom timeframe, please contact us directly.

A $150 deposit is required to secure your reservation. This deposit is fully refundable if canceled at least 5 days prior to the booking date or in the event of bad weather.

What’s Included With Your Pontoon Rental

Every Makana Surf Co. pontoon rental includes:

Rental Policies

To help keep our boats clean, safe, and enjoyable for all guests, please note the following:

  • No pets allowed onboard

  • No towing, tubing, wakesurfing, wakeboarding, or water skiing permitted at any time

  • Operation while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited

  • All passengers must follow onboard safety instructions at all times

Makana Surf Co. reserves the right to terminate rentals without refund for unsafe, reckless, or prohibited behavior.

Operator Requirements

  • Renters must be at least 21 years of age

  • A valid driver’s license is required

  • A valid Minnesota boater safety permit is required when applicable by law

  • Only the designated renter/operator listed on the rental agreement may operate the pontoon

  • All passengers must be present during the safety orientation prior to departure

  • All adult passengers are required to complete a digital liability waiver before boarding

Payments & Security Deposit

  • A $150 reservation deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your rental

  • Once booked, you will receive a confirmation text message or email. Please reply to confirm your reservation

  • A $1,000 security deposit authorization hold will be placed on the renter’s credit card prior to departure

After the rental period, the pontoon will undergo a post-trip inspection. If no new damage is found, the security deposit hold will be released.

The renter is financially responsible for any damages, excessive cleaning, missing equipment, fuel-related issues, towing/recovery costs, or policy violations incurred during the rental period.

Parking & Arrival Information

Parking near the launch area may be limited during peak hours. Additional street parking may be available nearby depending on location.

To ensure a smooth check-in process and maximize your time on the water, we recommend arriving at least 20 minutes prior to your scheduled rental time. This allows adequate time for:

  • Parking

  • Check-in

  • Safety orientation

  • Waiver verification

  • Vessel walkthrough

We understand delays can occasionally happen and will do our best to accommodate when possible. However, if another reservation is scheduled after your rental, lost time due to late arrival cannot be extended beyond your reserved rental period.

Minnesota Boater Education Requirements

Due to recent changes in Minnesota boating laws, certain operators are now required to obtain a valid watercraft operator’s permit before operating a motorized watercraft.

The law is being phased in over several years based on birth year:

  • Starting July 1, 2025: Operators born after June 30, 2004

  • Starting July 1, 2026: Operators born after June 30, 2000

  • Starting July 1, 2027: Operators born after June 30, 1996

  • Starting July 1, 2028: Operators born after June 30, 1987

To help make the process simple, we’ve included two approved options below depending on your boating experience and future plans.

Lifetime Minnesota Boater Safety Certificate

Best for individuals who plan to operate boats regularly in Minnesota or want a permanent certification option.

This course provides a lifetime boater education certificate and does not expire.

180-Day Temporary Rental Permit

Perfect for occasional renters, visitors, or first-time operators looking for a quick and convenient temporary permit option.

This temporary permit is valid for 180 days from completion and may satisfy Minnesota rental operator requirements when applicable.
